U.S. Capitol, Under Construction, William Russell Birch Engraving

We are not familiar with any earlier published image of the Capitol. This was originally engraved and published by Birch as the title page to his important illustrated book; The Country Seats of The United States of North America in 1808. Our print is a re-strike from the original plate printed in 1860 by Philadelphia antiquarian John McAllister. The image shows the North wing completed and the South wing still under construction with two stonemasons at work in the foreground. There is, as yet, no indication of the central section.
