Catterson Smith, as he always signed his work, was a well known 19th century British portrait painter who is well represented in both the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery, London. This delightful small work in pencil and chalk on paper depicts Henry Shorland Watts, whose daughter very helpfully labeled it, at the age of two and a half.
In its original, but regilded, frame and now with “museum” glass. The work itself measures 11″ x 8.5″
