Rare Lithograph “View of Washington City, D.C.”

This carefully drawn view of the East front of the Capitol also shows the Washington monument in the distance. The monument had not been completed at the time so is shown according to the design proposed by Robert Mills. This print was published by Casimir Bohn who seems to have been quite a promoter of Washington, but the actual lithography was done by Edward Sachse of Baltimore. Bohn and Sachse collaborated on a number of prints before 1868, all of Washington or towns in Virginia. This particular version is #678 in “Views and Viewmakers of Urban America…1825-1925”

Image size: 9 1/8 x 16 1/2

Sachse also did two lithographs of Fredericksburg for which we are always searching.
