Rare Early Shagreen Box

Rare Early Shagreen Box

An early 18th century black sharkskin box that must have had a specific use, but without the original lining in the lower section that use is hard to know. It does still retain its original and beautiful silk velvet lining in the upper portion, a remarkable survival of three centuries. The brass handle, lock, hinges and tiny button feet are original. There are several small patches in the shagreen on the back side.
