Rare Earl of Powis, Viscount Clive, Commemorative Staffordshire

A rare transfer printed dinner plate titled “In Commemoration of the Viscount Clive attaining his majority  November 5th 1839.”  The title surrounds an image of Powis Castle in its park with deer in the foreground. Edward James Herbert, 3rd Earl of Powis was the great grandson of Clive of India.

With the earliest printed mark of Joseph Clementson; “Manufatured by J. Clementson, Broad Street, Shelton, Staffordshire” Godden’s Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks records a single example of this mark on another plate from this service.
