These are part of a group of chairs of this period that came from the Green family of Fredericksburg. Colonial Williamsburg owns three chairs of two different designs with the same provenance. You can see them by going to emuseum.history.org and searching for 1992-19 and 1992-20. Our chairs are an elegant shield back design with a bit of line inlay similar to designs made in New York and Norfolk. Of course the line inlay is also seen on a number of the Fredericksburg tall clock cases. One interesting, and I believe distinctive, construction characteristic is the huge triangular glue blocks that I have not seen elsewhere. I’ve included a picture of one of Williamsburg’s chairs showing the same large blocks.
