This beautiful little miniature painting is signed at the lower right, but the brass plaque at the bottom of the frame identifies the image as “Bataille de Wagram d’apres Horace Vernet”. The original very large oil on canvas was painted about 1835 and is at Versailles. It depicts a significant Napoleonic victory in July of 1809 on a battlefield northeast of Vienna.
Horace Vernet was from a long line of artists and was actually born in the Louvre.
We have not identified the signature on this miniature. There is a small crack running about 2 inches from the right edge of the painting.
The gilt bronze frame is quite elegant and a work of art itself with cast eagles at each side and a large “N” within a wreath at the top.
The painting itself measures 2 3/4″ x 3 3/4″.
