An attractive portrait medallion of the son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. The Prince Imperial, also known as Louis Napoleon was born in 1856 in Paris and baptized in Notre Dame. The Bonapartists proclaimed him Napoleon IV when his father died but he was living in England at that time. He died with 18 spear wounds in 1879 fighting the Zulus in Africa.
This medallion has the Sevres green number mark on the back. The medallion itself is about 2.25 diameter.
