One of the earliest important American explorers, Ledyard accompanied Capt. Cook on his third and final voyage visiting the Pacific including Alaska and Hawaii. Ledyard, at Thomas Jefferson’s suggestion, attempted to reach America by traveling east from Paris but was arrested and deported by the Russians. He died in Cairo in 1789 after having written his last letter to Jefferson, which is included in this book.
