Important North Carolina Sideboard

A rare piedmont North Carolina mahogany and southern yellow pine sideboard. The complex, but familiar, Sheraton form is supported on ball and claw feet that might be expected on a piece two generations earlier. The feet are one piece with the stiles of the case, so unquestionably original. We know of only one other example like this, a sideboard in the MESDA research files [S-13195] that is somewhat smaller and simpler, but obviously from the same shop. That piece is from the Burton family of Lincoln County. Ours is from the Brawley family which was centered around Mooresville.

It is remarkably well preserved with only minor veneer repairs and replaced brasses. The secondary wood is all hard yellow pine. It may be the heaviest piece of furniture we have ever owned.
