Fridolin Schlegel, Portrait of William Dyer of Washington

Fridolin Schlegel exhibited at the National Academy, The American Art Union and The Pennsylvania Academy. He spent most of his career in New York. This very fine portrait of eight year old William Dyer of Washington is signed and dated 1853 on the back of the canvas. The portrait remained in the family until 1994 when it was sold to Miller & Areny Antiques of Georgetown. The Dyer family plot is in Holy Rood Cemetery in Washington.

The oval canvas, on its original stretcher, measures 20 x 23. It is in an appropriate modern gilt frame.
