A very unusual watch with the maker’s name, Duncan, [probably Geo. Duncan] on the dial and the movement. The silver case has hallmarks for London, 1724-5. The decoration of the case is a technique we had never before seen. A miniature landscape painting was done on the back of the case and then covered with a very this layer of translucent tortoise shell. The shell is held in place by very tiny silver rivets all around the edge.
