Coquilla Nut Box with Christian Motifs

Coquilla Nut Box with Christian Motifs

Coquilla nuts are the fruit of the Brazilian palm tree, a close relative to coconuts, but smaller and much finer in texture. The nuts have been imported to England, and used for ornamental carving, since at least the 18th century. In many cases it seems difficult to determine where they were carved. Our guess is that this one may have been carved in Brazil. The Christian iconography is interesting and very well executed.
