The British Museum has a box with the identical design showing two views of Lisbon, one before and one after the earthquake of 1755. It has a plain bottom. They also have another box with a top virtually identical to this one with portraits of Francis I and Maria Theresa flanking a medallion of their coat of arms. Our box has both scenes together in one piece. Both sides are signed “Geise” for Johan Henricus Giese.
