Important Livingston Family, New York, Silver Pitcher

A fine quality early New York silver pitcher made by John W. Forbes in New York city with his name mark along with Americanized pseudo English hallmarks including a profile head of George Washington. The pitcher is engraved with the arms and motto of the Livingston family. Robert Livingston, known as “The Chancellor”, administered the oath of office to George Washington in 1789 and served as U.S. Minister to France during the Jefferson administration. Opposite the arms are the engraved initials “PL” and on the front there is a later 19th century engraving “Martha Codwise Beekman.” The Codwise and Beekman families were both prominent in New York and intermarried with the Livingstons.
