Rebecca Cunningham Washington of Jefferson County [West] Virginia

Rebecca Cunningham Washington of Jefferson County [West] Virginia

Rebecca Janet Cunningham married Thomas Blackburn Washington the great-great nephew of George Washington. The couple lived at Claymont Court, which was built by Thomas’ father, Bushrod Corbin Washington. We believe the mountainous landscape in the background is the “Southern view” referenced on the back of the canvas and is a view of the Blue Ridge from Claymont Court.

The painting is identified, signed and dated in period ink on the back of the canvas. The artist, L. White, was obviously talented and this can not be his only portrait, but unfortunately we have been unable to locate any other signed or attributed works.

The portrait is in excellent condition, having been relined with a clear backing, to preserve the inscriptions. It is housed in an appropriate period gilt frame. The overall size, including the frame is 39 x 33.
