John W. C. Catlett of Gloucester, Va. by G. H. Durrie

This oil on canvas portrait is of John Walker Carter Catlett of Timberneck Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia. It is signed and dated by George Henry Durrie who was working in Petersburg over the winter of 1845-6. Durrie became well known for his snow scenes which were reproduced by Currier & Ives. A typed copy of Durrie’s diary describing his time in Petersburg, including several mentions of Mr. Catlett is attached on the reverse.

In excellent condition, the painting and its original oval spandrel are housed in a period “Sully” gilt frame.
