John Miers, Leeds Silhouette Painted on Plaster

A well detailed silhouette of an elegant lady by “The most famous profilest or painter of silhouettes in Britain” ┬áMiers was born in Leeds in 1756, but moved to London in 1788. Our silhouette, in its original gilt brass frame, has Miers’ printed label on the back. Miers is very well documented in a number of silhouette references that often mention his use of pine soot and beer to make the paint he used on the smooth plaster ground that he preferred to paper.
