A rare documented Maryland piece. This nice small desk has numerous inscriptions and a paper label relating it to the Jenkins family of Hancock, Md. One document drawer has a series of different inscriptions starting with Solomon Jenkins in 1866 and ending with Philip M. Jenkins in 1988. Another small drawer says that it was made for Wm. W. Jenkins by his brother, Benjamin Jenkins, in 1840. The printed paper label of W. W. Jenkins affixed inside the prospect door is in such nice condition that I suspect it may have been added by one of the later family members.
This desk has a nice interior with tiger maple drawer fronts, most of its original brasses and is smaller than the average piece of this form. Unfortunately, the feet are replaced.
