Big redware jars like this were used to ship Italian olive oil around the world in the 18th century. A number of them have been found on archeological sites in Virginia and there is a very similar example on display in the DeWitt Wallace Gallery in Williamsburg. Ours has an interesting impressed mark “CB” with a stylized olive tree one each handle. [one is quite eroded] The CB would have indicated the olive oil merchant. I found a drawing of the same mark taken from a jar in a museum in the Netherlands but have not found the name of the merchant.
